Earthquake ends dreams: Urja was preparing for MBBS, Upasana was waiting for visa

Gorakh Bahadur Singh’s family was fast asleep in Khalanga when the earthquake struck at midnight on Friday. He lost two daughters and a relative when his house was destroyed by the earthquake.

He himself, his elder daughter and his wife are also injured. Gorakh’s brother Surendra Suman Singh said that the Singh couple is being treated at Jajarkot District Hospital and their daughter is being treated at Nepalgunj. Singh’s daughter Upasana Singh, 21, was preparing to go to Australia.

She was waiting for the visa after completing the entire process. Younger daughter Urja, 18 years old, was preparing for MBBS after completing Plus Two. 25-year-old Melina, who passed away with them, was studying engineering. The funeral of the three deceased people was done on Saturday itself.

He was living in Khalanga with his three daughters, a relative’s daughter and his wife. When the house where his family lived collapsed in the earthquake, they were buried in the ruins. As it was night time, they could not be rescued immediately. When they were rescued four hours later, four people had died.

At the time of the incident, Surendra was in Barekot Rural Municipality. The epicenter of the Friday night earthquake is considered to be Lamidanda near Barekot. Although the condition of the injured Gorakh is out of danger, the Singh family has been disturbed by the loss of children.

Surendra feels that the nieces could have been saved if they had been rescued and treated in time. “Our family has to face such a great grief because we could not be rescued in time”, he said. -from inscriptions
